James Sunderland. It sounds like no one have ever said no to you before. It also sounds to me that you may not be a good fit for the Students Union. It's great that you have served your country and also achieved being an MP. However even in your response to the Students Union. Enquiring as to who is this person that dared to turn you down and that you could only attribute that it is because of your colour and not because you may not fit. In my humble opinion, shows why you may not fit
